An extra dose of protection: labels with protective varnish
The protective varnish protects your label against colour abrasion and increases its durability. Whether matt or glossy, we have the ideal solution for your high-quality labels that deserve additional protection. In general, we recommend a protective finish as a complement. Are you interested in protective varnish for your labels? The following points will help you make your decision:
- Design and print files
- Comparison: labels with and without protective varnish
- Protective varnish vs film lamination
- Test and select the material
- Options and extras
- Production, shipping and processing
Protective varnish enhances the quality of your product and provides additional protection. Select the appropriate parameters such as size, material and the protective varnish in the online calculator. Then specify the order details and finally upload the print files.
How does the protective varnish work?
Once your customised labels have been printed, a protective coating is applied to them in a final step. For this purpose, a clear liquid varnish is applied to the surface of your labels on sheets or roll labels, which is then cured with a UV lamp. This seals the surface and protects against colour abrasion.
In principle, etiqueta.es offers the protective varnish in glossy or matt. For matt materials, we recommend the matt protective varnish, and for glossy papers or polypropylene, the glossy varnish. In this way, the appearance of the material is preserved.

Comparison: labels with and without protective varnish
What can protective varnish really do? We have put it to the test! In the example on the left you can see a label without protective varnish, with visible scratches and a deteriorated surface. In contrast, the label on the right, treated with protective varnish, resists friction better and maintains a smooth, well-maintained surface. Our extreme test shows that applying protective varnish to your labels can make a difference and help you preserve their quality for longer.
Personalised labels reflect the quality of your products and enhance it. To maintain that quality for as long as possible, we recommend applying protective finishes, such as protective varnish. If you wish, we can prepare a folder with customised samples so that you can see the difference for yourself. Labels with protective varnish or better with lamination?
Your label deserves extra protection! You can choose between protective varnish or film lamination, depending on the level of resistance you need. As an alternative to protective varnish, which protects against daily wear and tear, we offer matt or glossy lamination, ideal for more intense protection. This finish not only improves the strength of your labels, but also prolongs their durability. The lamination process begins by applying a liquid adhesive to your high-quality labels. Then, using pressure and ultraviolet light, the laminate adheres firmly to the surface. We especially recommend this type of finishing for products in the cosmetic or chemical sector.
If your products are packaged in such a way that they can rub against one another, or if you need protection against colour abrasion, film lamination is definitely the best option. To make sure that the end result is exactly what you are looking for, we offer you our premium print proof, which allows you to check the finish before final production.
Protective varnish: flexible in use
Another advantage of protective varnish over film lamination is its flexibility of combination. While protective varnish is compatible with all materials and our decorative finishes, such as blind embossing or relief embossing, film lamination is not suitable for the these finishes. Tip: Labels with varnish are suitable for subsequent printing on thermal transfer printers.
