What is blind embossing?

High-quality labels with a personal touch stand out from the crowd. Compared to conventional unfinished printed labels, embossed labels shine not only because of their elegant and unobtrusive appearance, but also because of their special feel.

Blind embossing is only characterised by the partial deformation of the label material. This means that foil is always dispensed with and in most cases colour embossing is also dispensed with. This is why this process is also known as “dry embossing”. Of course, blind embossing can also be performed on a colour-printed surface. In this case, the minimalist charm and 3D effect of traditional embossing are toned down. However, this creates a new and special effect that, depending on the case, can be very useful and aesthetically pleasing.

How does blind embossing work?

Blind-embossed labels are created by a deformation on the surface of the label in the desired places. This is done with the help of a custom-made tool, heat and pressure. At etiqueta.es, your blind embossed labels get a raised shape and thus a perceptible outline. A distinction is made between positive embossing (embossing in relief) and negative embossing (embossing in recess). We cannot do the latter with our labels, due to the characteristics of the material.

The intensity of the embossing depends on the thickness of the material and the type of embossing tool. Most of our label materials, whether structured or smooth, can be combined with blind embossing.

Blind embossed labels: correct print files

For the correctness of the print files, several aspects have to be taken into account in the case of hot foil labels. Of course, our artwork service takes care of this. Your print files will be created or configured according to the package you select, you can opt for Smart or Pro.

Please note that for blind embossing, elements and fonts must have a minimum line thickness of 0.4 mm. In addition, blank spaces and areas with negative gaps need at least 0.6 mm to ensure a good result.

Production, pressure and embossed surface

A special tool is used for blind embossing, together with heat and pressure. This tool is reused several times and allows the label material to be deformed just in the desired area. At etiqueta.es, we use a magnesium tool by default, although, if you prefer, you can also request a brass one.

During the stamping process, small production-related variations may occur. Sometimes the stamped elements may not be exactly in the intended position. In addition, the pressure used influences the visual result: for embossing large elements, more pressure is required than for small ones. If the same tool contains elements of different sizes, this can result in a somewhat uneven finish.
Therefore, in these cases, we recommend making several tools, so that each element is embossed with the ideal pressure according to its size. Also keep in mind that the embossing surface has its limits: in very large areas a slight sagging may occur, reducing the relief effect.

We are here to advise you. And if you want to make sure that the result is exactly what you’re looking for, we recommend you to request a proof print. That way, your blind embossed label will look just the way you want it to.

Magnesium or brass?

If you opt for embossed labels, it’s important to choose the right tool. The magnesium tool is an economical choice in the short term and provides results with sharp edges, while the brass tool – although a larger investment – is ideal for delicate items that require more precise engraving, and brass is much more durable: it can be reused many more times, making it a more cost-effective and sustainable option in the long term.

Materials and types of adhesives for blind embossed labels

In our online calculator you can choose between different materials for your labels. Please note that blind embossing can only be applied on paper labels. At etiqueta.es we have specially selected papers for this type of finishing, tailored to your needs. For example, we offer several sustainable options, so you can combine embossing with an environmentally friendly approach, without sacrificing either aesthetics or functionality.
Depending on the final use of your labels, you can also choose the adhesive that best suits your needs. Among our options you will find:

  • Labels with permanent adhesive
  • Removable labels
  • Special freezer-grade labels

Do you want to test how the material or adhesive performs? Then we recommend that you order our free sample book.

Hot foil stamping and relief embossing as an alternative

Of course, your labels can have a finish other than blind embossing, or even combine several finishes! As we have already mentioned, blind embossing consists of a slight deformation of certain areas of the label, providing an elegant and subtle effect.

If you prefer an alternative, you can choose hot foil stamping. In this case, a metallic foil (without deformation) is applied to specific areas using heat, pressure and a special tool. And if you are looking for an even more striking result, you can choose relief embossing, which combines both processes: the surface is deformed and at the same time, a foil is applied to the desired areas. Would you like us to advise you on which finish goes best with your design? We are here to help you.

Proofing Service with etiqueta.es

If you prefer, we can produce a short run of your labels with blind embossing, respecting the original printing conditions. You can contact us by phone at +34 932 71 64 00 or by e-mail at info@etiqueta.es. Take this opportunity to do a proof print and make sure that the final result is exactly what you expect.

An extra dose of protection for your labels

Among the finishes with a protective function, film lamination and protective varnish stand out. Varnish gives your label a higher-quality surface and protects it against wear and tear. However, its properties must be matched to the specific label material to ensure a good result. Film Lamination, on the other hand, does not involve the application of varnish but consists of adding a transparent film that acts as an additional protective layer. Due to the deformation caused by blind embossing, it is not possible to apply an additional lamination. In this case, we recommend protective varnish.

Production, shipping and processing

Printing custom labels with blind embossing may seem like a long process… but it doesn’t have to be! In addition to our fast production and delivery times, in certain cases, you can choose express production, so you’ll receive your embossed labels even faster. Please note, however, that production time may be affected by factors such as print files that are not set up correctly or the manufacturing of an embossing tool.

In addition, we offer several shipping options, so you can choose the one that suits you best. Once your blind embossed labels have been produced and delivered, you can proceed with automatic, semi-automatic or manual labelling. And remember: in the case of roll labels with embossing, it is essential that you tell us the correct winding direction in advance, so that the labelling is done correctly and without problems.
