How does digital spot varnish work?
With digital spot varnish, you can highlight specific areas of your label with a glossy, transparent finish that attracts all eyes. Thanks to a printable PDF file and digital images, you define precisely where the varnish will be applied, creating an attractive and high-quality visual effect. Unlike conventional finishing, this process requires no physical tools, as everything is done digitally. This makes spot varnish a fast and economical alternative to traditional techniques such as hot stamping, blind embossing or embossing.
Ideal if you are looking for a professional finish without high costs or waiting times.
Correct creation of print files for digital spot varnish labels
To ensure that the print files are correct, several aspects must be taken into account in the case of labels with spot varnish. Of course, our proofing service is designed to help you. By choosing the package that best suits your needs, we will create or adapt your print files. You can choose between the Smart and Pro packages.
Keep in mind that when designing your labels with partial varnish, the elements and texts that you wish to highlight with varnish must have a minimum thickness of 0.3 mm. Blank spaces and negative elements must have a minimum thickness of 0.7 mm.
Label production with digital finishing
Spot varnish labels do not require special tools, as the finish is applied digitally. However, as with traditional finishes, small variations may occur during production. It is also important to consider the type of material. If the varnish is applied on porous surfaces, it may run. Therefore, textured papers or uncoated materials are not suitable for this type of finishing. Make sure everything looks as expected with our proofing service!

Traditional finishes as an alternative
Spot varnish ensures that certain elements of your label stand out thanks to a glossy, transparent coating. But, of course, you can also opt for traditional finishes that achieve similar effects. At etiqueta.es we offer you several options: hot foil stamping, blind embossing or embossing.
If you choose hot foil stamping, either as an alternative or as a complement, we apply a foil (without deformation of the surface) in specific areas using a special tool. Foils are available in different colours and with a wide variety of effects. Blind embossing, also called dry embossing, consists of a partial deformation of the label material. And if you are looking for an even more striking result, you can opt for relief embossing: a combination of blind embossing and hot foil stamping. The selected areas are not only deformed, but also coated with a metallic colour foil.
Compared to traditional finishes, digital spot varnish is economical, as no classical tools are used. It should be noted that spot varnishing only produces limited visual and tactile effects, similar to traditional finishes. For complex effects, we recommend traditional finishes. Our spot varnish is transparent, so colouring is limited. This can be compensated by selecting the background colour.
An extra dose of protection
Finishes with protective characteristics include film lamination and protective varnish. Protective varnish not only gives your label a higher quality or more eye-catching surface, but also protects it from regular wear and tear. With lamination, no varnish is applied, but a transparent film is applied over the label to protect it from more persistent wear. Both finishes can be combined with partial varnish. You will find more information about our different finishes on our website.
